SmartPreop

AI-Powered Preoperative Assessment Support

In collaboration with Consorci Hospitalari de Vic (CHV)

The Challenge

Anesthesiologists perform hundreds of preoperative evaluations weekly. Each assessment requires reviewing extensive patient documentation — medical history, laboratory results, imaging studies, current medications — to identify relevant clinical information before meeting the patient.

This process is essential for patient safety but time-intensive, often taking 30–40 minutes per patient for document review alone.

Our Solution

SmartPreop is a clinical decision support system that assists anesthesiologists in preparing preoperative assessment reports.

How It Works

  1. Document Processing — SmartPreop analyzes clinical documents to extract relevant patient information.

  2. Structured Organization — Extracted data is organized following standard preoperative assessment formats.

  3. Clinical Review — The anesthesiologist reviews, validates, and completes the assessment. All clinical decisions remain with the physician.

Core Principles

  • Data Extraction, Not Creation — SmartPreop only extracts information explicitly documented in patient records. It does not generate clinical conclusions or infer undocumented conditions.

  • Complete Audit Trail — Every extracted data point links back to its source document, enabling verification.

  • Human Oversight — The system supports clinical workflow; it does not replace clinical judgment. Final assessments require physician validation and completion.

Developed in Collaboration

SmartPreop is developed by Datamantics in clinical collaboration with Consorci Hospitalari de Vic (CHV).

The collaboration with CHV’s Department of Anesthesiology ensures that SmartPreop is built on real clinical needs, tested against actual workflows, and aligned with established medical practice.

Regulatory Approach

SmartPreop is designed with regulatory compliance in mind:

  • EU AI Act — Built with transparency, human oversight, and audit trail requirements
  • Medical Device Regulation — Designed as a clinical decision support tool with physician-in-the-loop
